GOSWAMI KRIYANANDA PDF

Born in , Kriyananda studied under the yogi and kabbalist Shelly Trimmer a direct disciple of Yogananda , and taught for decades out of his center in Chicago, the Temple of Kriya Yoga, before moving to Europe where he continued teaching students while maintaining his center in Chicago. From the early s up through the mids, I attended his lectures and classes on a weekly basis, while also having numerous conversations with him in private. Because some of these were reconstructed from memory after the fact, the exact wording may be slightly off at times, but never so much as to distort the spirit of the original comments. I always found Kriyananda to be a teacher of the highest integrity—I hope you find this collection of his remarks meaningful. Act and think accordingly.

A native Chicagoan, Kriyananda studied under the yogi and kabbalist Shelly Trimmer, a direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda. Kriyananda first began teaching Kriya yoga out of his home in Hyde Park in the s. At the urging of his students, he established the Temple of Kriya Yoga in the late s in the Fine Arts Building in downtown Chicago, just blocks from where Swami Vivekananda spoke at the Parliament of Religions in the building that is now the Art Institute of Chicago.

In addition to Kriya yoga, Kriyananda taught classes in mysticism, astrology, and other occult sciences. On Sundays, he led a meditation at noon, followed by a lecture. In the early s, Kriyananda moved the temple to a larger space in a building at State and Randolph Streets, then to a hotel the Chicago-Sheraton at that time on Michigan Avenue near Grand. There the Temple of Kriya Yoga began offering the first Hatha yoga teacher training program in Chicago, which it continues to offer today, in addition to seminary training and meditation teacher training.

Also in the early s, the temple sponsored the first yoga festival, the Yoga Festival of Joy, held at McCormick Place, attended by hundreds of people who were curious about yoga.

In , the temple moved to its current location at N. Kriyananda went into semi-retirement in the late s, living in Hawaii for seven years and then in France with his second wife, Rebecca, who transitioned two years ago.

His first wife, Joanna, passed away in Kriyananda was drafted into the army and served in the Korean War as a medic. Claiming to be colorblind, he administered care to both American and Korean soldiers to the consternation of his superiors.

In addition, his many students worldwide carry on his legacy. The temple continues to lead Sunday noon meditations and lectures, yoga classes, trainings, retreats, and other events. Kriyananda expressed a desire not to have any rituals or ceremonies after his death; to commemorate his passing, his instructions were that his students should teach. On May 29, a group of his students and disciples met at the temple to celebrate his life.

For now, as we have for the past couple of years, we will continue to reprint some of his past columns, sharing his down-to-earth insights, humor, and wisdom. The wisdom and inspiration that he gave us for living a better life, living our dream, treading the spiritual path, and awakening to the dream of reality—truth—will be with us forever.

He attended Haverford College and Brown University , leaving the latter with only a semester left before graduation to dedicate his life to searching for God. A year later, Yogananda had put Walters in charge of the monks there, asked him to write articles for the SRF magazine, had him lecture at various SRF centers, [2] ordained him a minister, and appointed him to initiate students into Kriya Yoga. While giving his speech, Yogananda suddenly dropped to the floor and died. Walters was present in the hall, and this was a pivotal moment for the young monk.
