ALAA EL ASWANY CHICAGO PDF

Shelves: for-harper-collins Its a bit appalling that I havent written about Chicago by now, because I actually finished it a while ago. My reluctance to write has nothing to do with my impression of the book, because I must say, I really liked it - more than I expected to. Not in a I cant part with this book sort of way, but I really did enjoy it. I read some reviews of the book after finishing it and was disappointed to see that it averaged about 3 stars. Come on, people. One reader suggested he or she expected it to be similar to an Orhan Pahmuk novel in some way.

To that reader and to the others, I say POO. In a weird way, it resonated with me in a similar manner as my beloved Tales of the City books. Chicago is the story of several Egyptian students and faculty members as well as a couple Americans at the University of Illinois in Chicago hematology program. I am too lazy to look it up. But it involves cells and science and, um, stuff. It had that same sort of cliffhanger aspect that Tales of the City has…just with different unknowns hanging in the balance.

Will the professor who had previously completely renounced his Egyptian heritage or, at least, its customs continue to act like a bonehead about his daughter moving in with her boyfriend? What will happen next?? This is all my way of saying that this was a fun, interesting read.

Al-Aswani kills all of the players and keeps the last two not literally. He did the same thing in his first novel. If books were rated, Id rate this one R for nudity and sexual scenes. Al-Aswani is obsessed with sexual scenes, or he just enjoys dissecting his characters down to the core exposing every detail of their private moments. For a moment, I thought perhaps the writer took a crash course in psychiatry before writing this novel.

I was very Like in a chess game, Dr. I was very impressed by his ability to present and explain what was going through the mind of each character. With this novel, Dr. Al-Aswani provides a proof that he can write about anything he wants; history, politics, religion, relationships, …. What I did not like in this novel? Too many main characters. Religion- the use of Islamic believes and the Quranic verses in a sarcastic way.

His best friend is Coptic Christian, and his girl friend is Jewish, and he has strong patriotic feelings towards Egypt. At the end he was picked up by the FBI as a terrorist suspect…. Probably Dr. Rushdy Abaza died in , long before G. Still I think Dr. Al-Aswani worked hard on this novel, and I was impressed.
